1. History

The 443 area code emerged as an overlay for the prefix 410 on June 1st, 1997. This code was created as part of the overlay plan from the (North American Numbering Plan) to prevent exhaustion of central office codes and telephone numbers.

The Original area code owned to the Maryland state is the 301. This dialing code used to serve the entire territory until the creation of the 410 code in 1991; eventually, the proliferation of cell phones in the area made necessary the activation of a new prefix.
